Expanded services and an outgrown location mean it is time for brand new site plans and a vastly optimistic fundraising campaign to raise money from the public. The current facility trembles with the excitement of the approaching fruition of the long years of planning.

The Senior Center is actively raising money for this important building project. The required figure is estimated at $1.8 million. Private donations and pledges for a new senior center have been made, approximating $250,000. The Senior Center applied for a state grant funded by the economic stimulus package, and news came in mid-July 2009 that the state has granted $200,000 to the project. This is a huge step toward a new senior center. The remaining $1,350,000 needed to build the new center would come from a USDA-Rural Development loan, an applied for Community Development Assistance Program grant to the county of Flexible Opportunity federal stimulus funds, and the Senior Center's capital campaign fund begun in the 2000s. Costs for furniture and fixtures are not included in the $1.8 million construction total. Community donation, interest and cooperation are still key.

Below is a Master Site Plan of the new Bond County Health Department building already underway and the proposed Senior Center facility to be built nearby on the same tract of land. The Health Department has agreed to lease the land to the Senior Center for 99 years at $1 per year.

The building project is needed because of the physical state of the existing building and problems related to the current location. The building on South Third Street was built in 1923 and first renovated in 1983. Some structural issues related to the age and construction of the building have been very costly to address and difficult to resolve. Among these are the barrel roof, the brick outer surface, the heating and air conditioning systems, and a wall shared with an adjoining business. The building faces a state highway, creating periodic difficulties with heavy traffic and accessibility for older persons and persons with physical challenges. Parking is inadequate and there is no room to expand either the building or parking areas.

The proposed project is the construction of a 10,000 square foot multipurpose center serving older adults, caregivers, economically disadvantaged and the general public. The project is shovel ready. Land has been acquired and the environmental study has been done. The immediate economic stimulus benefit will be to the construction industry as well as related industries. Long term benefits will be in several areas including job retention for current employees, job expansion, providing services available to persons in economic stress, and provision of services to a rapidly growing aging population.

Among services currently provided are on-site and home-delivered meals, transportation, food pantry, pharmaceutical assistance, information and referral, insurance counseling, income tax assistance, privately funded energy assistance, et. al. Co-located services available include Social Security, Veterans Administration and legal assistance. The center is also the fiscal agent for the DHS Front Door program, assisting TANF eligible individuals retain or seek employment.
